  • Location: Cardiff (5-7 Museum Place, Cardiff, CF10 3BD)
  • Organiser: Community Cooperation Wales (supported by our Culture Grant)
  • Free / All ages / Family friendly

This event will give attendees a clear, engaging introduction to Lunar New Year traditions and their meanings. It will cover the festival’s origins and symbols, explain why families clean their homes before the new year, and describe how red decorations, lanterns, and firecrackers are used to welcome good luck and keep away the monster Nian.

What’s happening

We’re bringing the joy and traditions of Lunar New Year to Cardiff as part of our culture grant programme. The event will introduce local communities to Chinese New Year customs through hands‑on activities, performances, and family-friendly workshops.

Planned highlights

  • Lion and dragon dances and lantern displays
  • Traditional crafts: paper cuttings, fu character decorations, knot-making
  • Food stalls featuring dumplings and sticky rice balls
  • Storytelling about the Nian legend and zodiac animals
  • Chap Goh Mei orange‑throwing demonstration and cultural talk about its meaning

Why this matters

“This festival is known by many names: Chinese New Year, Spring Festival, and Lunar New Year.” The Lunar New Year celebrations last fifteen days.

These traditions celebrate family, renewal, and good fortune. Our event aims to make those traditions accessible to everyone in Cardiff, strengthen community ties, and celebrate cultural diversity funded through our culture grant.

Accessibility: We will provide wheelchair access and sensory‑friendly spaces; please contact us for specific needs.
